Raised in a family that met through rodeo and moving across the South before settling in Norman, Oklahoma, he pursued collegiate wrestling and football while studying art history at the University of Oklahoma. Choosing acting over a degree, he relocated to Los Angeles, where delivering scripts for a talent-management firm opened his first roles, including a lead in the 1997 series Fame L.A..
