Matt Glover reveals the 18 months of VFX behind the monster of Below
The VFX supervisor details how the team combined real sets and digital effects to bring Snook’s Arm’s creature to life.
The giant monster of Below was sculpted over 18 months of intensive work. VFX supervisor Matt Glover, from the company Mr. X, explains that the team shot outdoors in Newfoundland, without a blue screen around the boats, then added digital elements such as the iceberg and the cephalopod. They covered an entire village with artistic sets, allowing the characters to stay close to the water while maintaining the threat. The process blended location scouting, narrative requirements and visual effects constraints so that the creature moves from fear to understanding in the series.
