Disney considered a cross-media franchise around Abarat

The project, ultimately abandoned, was to blend books, games and films around Clive Barker's universe.

Disney studied the creation of a cross-media franchise around the Abarat saga by Clive Barker. The British author, now 74 years old, is a jack-of-all-trades: novelist, playwright, comic book and video game writer, painter and filmmaker, pioneer of splatterpunk. He first struck the public consciousness with Hellraiser in 1987, which became a cult classic, then with Cabal in 1990, a theatrical flop that later achieved cult status. According to AlloCiné, Disney was ready to fund the project in 2000, after Barker had, as early as 1995, begun painting large canvases intended for a "Book of Hours" of 25 stories.
