Steven E. de Souza defends his 1994 Street Fighter

The director reminds that the film was made to be funny, despite online criticism.

Steven E. de Souza, who wrote and directed the Street Fighter of 1994 with Jean-Claude Van Damme, Raul Julia and Ming-Na Wen, responds to social media reactions that label it a “serious drama”. He asserts the film was “intentionally funny”. After the failure of Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li in 2009, the franchise returns with the new Street Fighter from Paramount and Legendary, box-office leader this month. De Souza appreciates the nods to the original film, including the reappearance of M. Bison’s iconic line. He says the series shows it remains “strong”.
