Fuxi: Four Tales of Feasting

Qiu Jiongjiong’s film blends millennial myths with theatrical staging around food.

A New Old PlayTrailer · A New Old Play

In his new feature, Sino-Sichuanese director Qiu Jiongjiong offers a visual banquet where food becomes the thread that ties four stories spanning more than two thousand years of myth and history. The set, painted like a stage, the fabrics rippling like water, the extravagant costumes - sometimes astral bodies or dogs - reinforce a quasi-theatrical aesthetic. At 135 minutes, Fuxi: Four Tales of Feasting is shorter than his previous A New Old Play (three hours), but it loses nothing in ambition. The cast brings together Lee Kang Sheng, Lee Hong-Chi, Annie Chen, Fan Guang Yao, Wang Talu, Wang Yitong, Xue Xuchun and Wang Ha. Shown in competition at the Tokyo Film Festival, the film describes itself as spicy and addictive, even if it is not always easy to digest. Source: The Hollywood Reporter.
