Fred Cavayé has directed a new adaptation of Les Misérables, released in a France in the midst of unrest. The director believes that even a historical film must resonate with everyone's life. He adds that the novel transcends politics to speak of humanism and offers a guidebook for a more solidaric world. According to AlloCiné, he hopes the film will encourage audiences to discover Hugo's novel, a major figure of French humanism. Camille Cottin, playing Madame Thénardier, links her character's actions to the comprehensive law that protects women and children from sexual violence. She highlights the scale of the problem, citing three children per class who are victims of incest or abuse. Noémie Merlant, who portrays Fantine, expresses her concern about these realities.
