Netflix streams Kitano's samurai film Kubi

Acquired after three years of waiting, the feature blends blood and dark humor, already shown at Cannes Premiere 2023.

Netflix has acquired the streaming rights to Kubi, Takeshi Kitano's samurai film presented at Cannes Premiere 2023. After three years of waiting, the feature, born from a project launched in 1993, blends a bloody spectacle with delirious dark humor. The camera lingers on a river strewn with corpses before zooming in on a decapitated body, where small crabs clutch the bloodied neck. Kitano, 76, spares no gush of blood, a sharp sword in his mouth, chain decapitations. According to Écran Large, the director is adapting his own 2019 novel, a project that even Akira Kurosawa called a future masterpiece in the shadow of The Seven Samurai.
