A new XXL version of Les Misérables by Victor Hugo has just been announced for the cinema. According to Écran Large, the film, directed by Fred Cavayé and backed by a five-star cast - Vincent Lindon, Tahar Rahim, Camille Cottin - fits into the wave of French heritage blockbusters launched by The Three Musketeers and The Count of Monte Cristo. Those successes have prompted French studios to revisit literature, with recent adaptations of The Stranger by Albert Camus, Journey to the End of the Night by Céline, Nana by Émile Zola and The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux. Pathé’s next project, The Accursed Kings, will even be shot in English, following the same unprecedented strategy.
