"Beach Fictions" charms Busan with its double narrative of a day

A Korean diptych that explores fatalism and imagination in 145 minutes.

The film Beach Fictions captivated the main jury of the Busan Festival. It follows a young woman through two successive versions of the same day, guided by storytellers and the notion of destiny. Fatalism, self-determination and imagination gently clash to dominate the narrative. Although the structure recalls Sliding Doors or Blind Chance, director Lim Hayeon puts his own style and tone on it, while still recalling Hong Sangsoo's Right Now, Wrong Then. According to Variety, the 145-minute diptych proves surprisingly airy while maintaining impressive mastery. The film, presented in its world premiere, should easily win over other programmers on the international festival circuit.
