Judith Godrèche adapts the book by Annie Ernaux, The Memory of a Girl, which arrives in theatres this week. In the film, Ernaux travels to Rouen to sign her latest work, suffers a vertigo and relives the summer of 1958, her first night with a man. The director recreates the sets, costumes and period music, immersing the viewer in the discomfort and excitement of a young camp counselor. Her work was built through daily exchanges with the author, music notes, readings and interviews. According to AlloCiné, Ernaux praised the screenplay for its “inner fidelity”. The result offers a reflection on self-construction and power dynamics.
