Wes Craven's original installment, released in 1996, grossed $173 million, laying the groundwork for the meta slasher, according to Screen Wide. The success rests on the original cast - Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, David Arquette, Drew Barrymore and Matthew Lillard - whom the producers brought back, even after the 2022 reboot. Courteney Cox said she wants to direct Scream 8, a project that appears to be taking shape. Henry Winkler, who played the principal, said in the In Depth with Graham Bensinger podcast that the studio refused to put his name on the poster, fearing his Fonzie image would break the myth.
