M3GAN 2.0: more fun, less horror

According to Écran Large, the first M3GAN (2022) was a nice gamble for Blumhouse. Directed by Gerard Johnstone, it moved away from Jason Blum's horror vein to explore a sci-fi farce mixed with thriller and tongue-in-cheek. With a budget of $12 million and more than $180 million in box-office, the film justified the return of the Terminator-style doll, still alongside Allison Williams and Violet McGraw.

According to Écran Large, M3GAN 2.0 leans into more fun, action and colorful visuals, at the cost of dubious messaging and a certain hypocrisy. The sequel drops the horror codes of the first installment, loses a bit of sarcasm and its cheesy tone, but gains wild, unrestrained madness. The action scenes are judged 'not so badly filmed', the impossible dilemmas and fun punchlines are highlighted. The film opens in theaters on June 25, and the review was reposted when it appeared on Netflix on September 25.
