"Obsession" and "Backrooms" mark a turning point for "Easy Rider"

The two films revitalize theaters and recall the upheaval of 1970s cinema.

Obsession and Backrooms are cited by the co-director of Sony Pictures Classics as the new "Easy Rider" of cinema. No major industry event in the past three months has escaped the discussion around the phenomenon created by Kane Parsons and Curry Barker. Made by young people in their twenties and beyond who came from YouTube, the two titles blew past box-office expectations and drew a massive Gen Z audience to theaters.

While producers look to capitalize on this momentum, Parsons is already working on the sequel to the A24 film that earned $400 million. At the Zurich Summit, he clarified that he does not see his adaptation as a horror film, describing it instead as a simple marketing framework more comfortable for audiences.
