Denmark presents Woman Unknown at the Oscars
May el-Toukhy's film, winner of the Golden Lion in Venice, represents Denmark in the International Feature category.
Denmark has chosen Woman Unknown by May el-Toukhy as its official entry for the International Feature category at the Oscars. The feature, which captured the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, bears the signature of a unique filmmaker in competition this year.
The jury, chaired by Maggie Gyllenhaal, awarded the Golden Lion to Woman Unknown and the Volpi Cup to its lead performer, Mathilde Arcel. May el-Toukhy was the only female director in competition at Venice.
After a premiere in Toronto, the film will be screened at the BFI London Film Festival and in Busan. Tine Fischer, director of the Danish Film Institute, recalled that May el-Toukhy becomes only the second Danish director to win the Golden Lion, after Ordet by Carl Th. Dreyer in 1955.
