The director Zach Cregger, known for Barbarian and last year’s hit Weapons, has once again electrified the box-office with his reboot of Resident Evil. The film pulled in $60 M on its opening weekend, far exceeding the $40-$50 M forecasts and setting the best debut in the 24-year-old franchise.
This new installment, Sony’s second recent remake and the eighth entry in the series, surpasses the previous record held by Resident Evil: Afterlife (2010), which opened at $26 M (unadjusted for inflation). The success is credited to strong reviews, solid word-of-mouth, and Cregger’s name recognition, as he previously guided Weapons to $43 M domestically before finishing at $270 M worldwide.
