Born in Portland, Maine, Rowell began ballet lessons at eight while in foster care, later dancing with the American Ballet Theatre II and studying through the Juilliard School’s Dance Extension before turning to runway and catalog modeling in the 1980s. She entered film with the 1987 comedy Leonard Part 6 and quickly secured recurring spots on The Cosby Show and As the World Turns.
