Born Timothy Grunig in Washington, D.C., Carhart grew up in Evanston, Illinois, spent time in Turkey and France, and eventually returned to the United States to study theater. He entered television with NBC’s 1978 mini-series The Awakening Land and throughout the 1980s built a résumé of guest spots on shows such as Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Miami Vice and Crime Story.
