Raised in Chicago’s LeClaire Courts and the sole child of a seamstress-turned-nurse’s aide, he later studied architecture and interior design at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign before joining Iota Phi Theta. His performing career launched on stage, where he appeared in productions such as The Wiz, Dreamgirls and Ain’t Misbehavin’ and toured nationally with Sesame Street Live.
