Raised in New Cross, London, within a Turkish-Cypriot household, Hassan left school to help on market stalls and took up boxing at ten. By seventeen he was competing as an amateur, securing two British titles before an injury forced him to abandon the sport and turn to managing nightclubs and restaurants.
