Raised in Steubenville, Ohio, Paulin completed his secondary education locally before earning a political-science degree at Pomona College and pursuing theatre and music studies at Ohio State University. He entered the screen world with guest spots on several late-1970s television series, including two episodes of St. Elsewhere, and gained early attention in the 1979 TV movie Vampire.
