Born in Minneapolis and raised between the United States and Italy, she earned a BFA in drama from the University of Michigan and speaks fluent Italian and Yiddish. After moving to New York, she broke out onstage in the Off-Broadway rock musical Hedwig and the Angry Inc, later reprising Yitzhak in the 2001 film.
