Born in South Croydon and schooled at Brighton College and Emmanuel College, Cambridge, he refined his craft at Herbert Beerbohm Tree's Academy of Dramatic Art, later known as RADA. After a brief military stint and involvement in pacifist theatre, he turned to professional acting in 1911, also writing anti-war plays and translating Molière for the stage.
