Born Dillon Monroe Buckley in Santa Barbara, California, she later adopted the name Maika and at seventeen moved to Cabarete, Dominican Republic, to train in kite-boarding while completing high school online. Her first screen appearance was a minor role in the series Eleventh Hour, followed by a supporting part in the 2012 film At Any Price, which led her to relocate to Los Angeles.
