Born near Copenhagen and raised in the Nørrebro district, he first served in the Royal Danish Army before briefly studying biology and working as a street performer. At 27 he entered the National Theatre School of Denmark, graduating in 1995, and later received the Reumert Prize of Honour for his contributions to Danish theatre.
