Born in Oslo, Hivju trained at the Danish subdivision of the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts (GITIS), graduating in 2004 before entering television with series such as Fox Grønland and Seks som oss and the avalanche drama Manhunt (2008). He performed on stage at Grusomhetens Teater and Trøndelag Teater and wrote scripts for the short films Closework (2005) and Flax (2008).
