Raised in a Reform Jewish family after relocating from Fort Lauderdale to West Bloomfield, Michigan, Bartha pursued filmmaking and theatre at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. He entered the industry as a production assistant on Analyze This before making his debut as a clubgoer in 54 and showcasing his writing and directing with Highs and Lows at SXSW in 2003.
