Raised in the Chicago suburb of Glenview, she attended Maine East High School before studying drama at NYU after being discovered in a nationwide talent search by Norman Lear. Early television appearances included a guest spot on Diff’rent Strokes and a recurring role on The Facts of Life, leading to her film debut in Endless Love and a co-starring part in the 1980s sitcom Square Pegs.
