Emerging from Germany, Handtke entered the acting profession after completing his training in the performing arts, quickly moving into screen work. His early film appearances include a role in the 1991 drama Keep on Running, followed by supporting parts in international productions such as Enemy at the Gates (2001) and Hart's War (2002), where he portrayed military figures.
