Born in Amarillo, Texas, and raised largely in Sidney, Nebraska, he completed high school in 1958 before serving as a second-class radioman in the U.S. Navy. After discharge he pursued Method acting under Frank Corsaro in New York City and earned a B.A. in English at California State University, Northridge, where he studied poetry with Ann Stanford.
