Born in Munich to a family of actors, Burkhard attended a boarding school in England before launching his screen career with the German TV film Tante Maria in 1979. After a stint in the United States during the 1990s, he returned to Europe where he secured the role of Alexander Brandtner in the Austrian-German series Kommissar Rex, a part that made him widely known across the region.
