Born and raised in London, he attended St Ignatius College, Enfield, then trained at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, graduating in 1997 before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company. An ITV scout discovered him during his studies, leading to a lead in the Ruth Rendell adaptation Going Wrong and his film debut opposite Jean-Claude Van Damme in Legionnaire.
