Raised in Taipei to a Chinese-Filipino father and an American mother, Chang moved to the United States at 17 to study theatre and film, later honing her craft in Seattle. She attended Taipei American School, became fluent in Mandarin, and after high school pursued acting studies in Kansas before continuing training in Seattle.
