Born to a teacher and raised in Kassel, he studied acting at the Bochum drama school from 1967 to 1970 before joining ensembles in Wuppertal, Frankfurt, Bremen and Hamburg, where he worked with directors such as Claus Peymann, Luc Bondy and Peter Zadek.
