Fils de l'acteur Timothy Spall, Rafe Joseph Spall a grandi à East Dulwich et, à quinze ans, a rejoint le National Youth Theatre après avoir échoué aux grandes écoles de théâtre. Il s’est fait remarquer par ses collaborations avec Edgar Wright dans Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz et The World’s End, et par son interprétation de Yann Martel dans Life of Pi (2012), film primé aux Oscars.
