Originaire de Woodstock, en Ontario, il a grandi dans une famille d'origine néerlandaise, a fréquenté le lycée catholique St Mary et pratiqué le basket, le hockey et le golf. Dès l'âge de six ans il apparaît dans une trentaine de spots publicitaires, décrochant son premier rôle cinématographique à sept ans dans Life with Mikey.
