Adopté à la naissance et élevé entre le Pays de Galles et le sud-est de l’Angleterre, il a fréquenté le Tonbridge School grâce à une bourse, a passé ses étés au National Youth Theatre et a étudié la littérature anglaise à Emmanuel College, Cambridge, où il a participé aux Footlights et à la Marlowe Society, attirant l’attention du metteur en scène Peter Hall.
