Fils d'une secrétaire et d'un criminel, il a grandi dans une famille modeste du Texas avant d'étudier le théâtre et l'anglais à Hanover College, où il obtient son diplôme en 1983. Sa percée télévisuelle survient lorsqu'il incarne le serveur naïf Woody Boyd dans la sitcom à succès Cheers, rôle qui lui vaut un Emmy du meilleur second rôle comique.
