After the first steps of man on the Moon, NASA decided to continue manned flights. Jim Lovell, who two years earlier had participated in the Apollo 8 flight, was chosen to lead the Apollo 13 mission. With Fred Haise and Ken Mattingly, he underwent intensive training. A week before the scheduled departure, doctors detected signs of measles in Ken Mattingly. Reluctantly, Jim Lovell had to resign himself to replacing him with Jack Swigert, who was insufficiently prepared in his opinion. On launch day, April 11, 1970, Apollo 13 took off from Cape Kennedy, to general indifference. Until the third day, everything went well...
