Formé à l'Institut national des beaux-arts de Pékin, il fuit la Chine communiste en 1949 pour Hong Kong, où il rejoint l'industrie cinématographique grâce à Li Han-hsiang. Dessinateur puis acteur chez Shaw Brothers, il remporte le prix du meilleur second rôle au Festival Asie-Pacifique en 1959 pour The Kingdom and the Beauty. Sa première réalisation, The Story of Sue San (1964), est suivie en 1966…
